WHAT YOUR POLICY PAYS

How MBP pays out for you.

Mechanical Breakdown Protection responds when a covered component on your vehicle fails during your coverage term. Your plan level — Coverage A (Powertrain), B (Comprehensive), or C (Complete) — determines which component groups are included, from engine and transmission through electrical, fuel, steering, and suspension systems.

Every plan carries a $100 deductible per claim, pays up to $7,500 per claim and $25,000 over the life of the policy, and includes rental reimbursement, towing, and trip interruption benefits so you’re not left stranded during repairs. Call us before any repair work begins so we can authorize your diagnostic.

  • Covered mechanical and electrical component failures
  • Parts and labour for repairs at a licensed repair centre
  • Rental, towing, and trip interruption support included

Skip the paperwork for now. Call our claims team and we'll walk you through exactly what you need for your specific policy — before you take another step.

Before You File

Documents you’ll need.

Mechanical Breakdown claims start with a diagnostic from a licensed repair centre and your maintenance history. Gather these before you call and we’ll typically process your file within 3–5 business days once we have everything.

Benefits Request Form

Your signed form listing policy number, date of breakdown, described vehicle, and a description of the component failure. We’ll email this to you when we open your file.

Diagnostic & Repair Estimate

A written diagnostic and repair estimate from a licensed repair centre identifying the failed component(s) and the parts and labour required. Do not authorize repair work until we’ve reviewed this.

Service & Maintenance History

Service history showing scheduled maintenance has been kept up to date — oil changes, fluid services, and manufacturer-recommended intervals. Lapsed maintenance can affect coverage.

Vehicle & Banking Details

VIN, odometer at time of breakdown, and a void cheque or pre-authorized debit form for EFT payment.

After you submit

What happens next.

Once your file is complete, most Mechanical Breakdown claims are reviewed within 3–5 business days. Here’s what to expect from submission to payout.

Day 1

We confirm receipt

Email submissions are reviewed in the order received. We’ll confirm what’s arrived, flag anything still missing, and reach out directly if we need clarification on the damage or repair details.

Days 3–5

Claim reviewed

Our claims team reviews the repair or replacement details against your policy’s coverage limits and eligibility conditions. If approved, you’ll receive a payout letter detailing the benefit that will be applied to your claim.

After approval

Benefit paid out

Your approved benefit is paid per your policy terms — either directly to the repair facility where possible, or reimbursed to you via EFT wherever we can. You’ll receive confirmation once the payment is issued.

MBP Claims FAQ

Questions we hear most about MBP.

Answers to the questions we hear most often when a covered mechanical or electrical failure happens. Have something specific? Call us at 1-844-427-7587 before any repair work begins.

Your coverage tier determines which component groups are protected. Coverage A (Powertrain) covers your engine, transmission, and drive axle/drivetrain. Coverage B (Comprehensive) adds brakes, climate control, cooling, electrical, fuel, steering, and suspension. Coverage C (Complete) covers all component groups combined. Electrical coverage on Hybrid, PHEV, and EV vehicles includes the Electric Drive System, Charging System, Regenerative Braking, and HVAC. Like all products, there are limitations and exclusions — all coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of your contract.
Repairs must be completed at a licensed repair centre, and you must contact Optiom before any repair work begins so we can authorize the diagnostic and estimate. Call us at 1-844-427-7587 to confirm your repair shop before authorizing any work.
Mechanical Breakdown Protection responds to the sudden failure of a covered component during your coverage term. Routine wear items and normal maintenance are not covered. Because the line between a covered breakdown and non-covered wear can depend on the specific component and circumstances, call us before any repair work begins so we can review the diagnostic and confirm what your policy pays for.
Yes. A $100 deductible applies to every claim. Your policy pays up to $7,500 per claim for covered parts and labour, up to a $25,000 total limit over the life of your policy. All three coverage tiers also include Rental Reimbursement ($50/day, up to 5 days, capped at $250 per claim), Towing ($200/incident, up to 3 incidents, $600 term cap), and Trip Interruption ($300/night, up to 2 nights) if your breakdown occurs 200 km or more from home.
Yes. Keeping up with manufacturer-recommended maintenance — oil changes, fluid services, and scheduled service intervals — is important, and we may ask for your service history when reviewing a claim. Lapsed or missed maintenance can affect whether a component failure is covered. When you call to open a file, we’ll walk you through what documentation to gather.
Under the Limitations Act, you have up to two years from the date of the breakdown to report your claim, submit your paperwork, and settle. That said, MBP requires pre-authorization before any repair work begins — so the moment you notice a covered breakdown, call us at 1-844-427-7587 before authorizing a repair shop to start work.
A quick safety note
Optiom will never ask you to pay a fee to process your claim. If someone claiming to be from Optiom requests payment to release your benefit, hang up and call us directly at 1-844-427-7587.
