What Your Policy Pays

How Vehicle Replacement pays out for you.

When your primary auto insurer declares your vehicle a total loss and pays your claim, your Optiom benefit fills the shortfall between that settlement and what a replacement vehicle actually costs today. How your benefit is calculated depends on your Coverage Type, listed on page 1 of your Policy Declaration.

New Vehicle Coverage pays the MSRP of a current-model equivalent replacement, less your primary insurer settlement. Used Vehicle Coverage pays the vehicle value insured on your Optiom policy, less your primary insurer settlement — plus, if you purchased the optional Vehicle Value Appreciation Benefit, an added 5% of your original purchase price per year.

  • Documentation Fees and Protection Packages from your original bill of sale are included, subject to policy maximums.

  • Taxes are included if your primary insurer included taxes in your settlement.

  • Deductible Reimbursement up to $500 is paid directly to you via EFT, if listed in your policy wordings.

Example Calculation

New Vehicle Coverage

MSRP of equivalent replacement$45,000
Less primary insurer settlement– $28,000
Optiom covers$17,000

Illustrative example. Actual benefit varies based on your policy terms, Coverage Type, and primary insurer settlement.

Before You File

Documents you’ll need.

Vehicle Replacement claims share the same baseline requirements as any Optiom total loss claim. Gather these before you call and we’ll typically process your file within 3–5 business days once we have everything.

Benefits Request Form

Your signed form listing your Optiom policy number, date and type of loss, described vehicle, primary insurer details, and adjuster contact info. We’ll email this to you when we open your file.

Lienholder Balance Statement

Documentation from your lienholder or lessor confirming the balance owing on your loan or lease as of the date of loss.

Primary Insurer Documents

Your Mitchell total loss valuation report, a copy of your settlement cheque, and insurance documents showing your coverages and rate class as of the date of loss.

Vehicle & Banking Details

Original bill of sale for the written-off vehicle, VIN and odometer at time of loss, police report or file number if applicable, plus a void cheque or PAD form for EFT payment.

What Happens Next

Your claim, step by step.

Once we have all your documents, our Total Loss team takes it from here. Here’s what to expect from the moment you file to the moment your replacement is on the road.

Step 1 · Day 1

We confirm receipt.

Send your completed Benefits Request Form and supporting documents to claims@optiom.com, and we’ll confirm we’ve received your file. Email submissions are reviewed in the order received, so sending everything at once helps us move quickly.

Step 2 · Days 3–5

We review and issue your payout letter.

Please allow 3–5 business days once all your documents are in. Your payout letter details the benefits available on your policy and the minimum replacement vehicle value you’ll need to maximize your Optiom benefit.

Step 3 · After Approval

Payments are issued in order.

After you send your final bill of sale, payments flow in this order: any Premium Finance Agreement balance, then your Vehicle Finance Contract balance, then the remainder to your dealership. Deductible Reimbursement, if applicable, is paid directly to you via EFT.

Frequently Asked

Vehicle Replacement claim questions.

Answers to the questions we hear most from clients filing a total loss claim. If yours isn’t here, call our Claims team at 1-844-427-7587.

Optiom will only pay a total loss benefit under your policy if your primary auto insurer declares your vehicle a total loss and pays your claim under your primary auto insurance. Agreements for payment where the vehicle is not written off — such as accepting cost of repairs plus salvage as your settlement — are not categorized as a total loss and would not be eligible for Optiom’s total loss benefit. We recommend you contact Optiom before accepting any settlement offer from your primary insurer to confirm your vehicle is in fact a total loss.

Your calculation depends on your Coverage Type, listed on page 1 of your Policy Declaration.

New Vehicle Coverage: Your benefit is calculated as the MSRP of a current-model equivalent replacement (same or similar make, model, and options as your original vehicle), less the fair market value of your original vehicle as of the date of loss (typically your primary insurer settlement). Documentation Fees and Protection Packages from your original bill of sale are included, subject to policy maximums.

Used Vehicle Coverage: Your benefit is calculated as the vehicle value insured on your Optiom policy, less the fair market value of your original vehicle as of the date of loss. If you purchased the optional Vehicle Value Appreciation Benefit, an additional 5% of your Original Purchase Price is added per year, calculated from your policy effective date to the date of total loss.

Deductible Reimbursement up to $500 is paid directly to you via EFT, if listed in your policy wordings.

If the name of your original dealership appears on your Policy Declaration, yes — you must return to your originating dealership to replace your vehicle. Your dealership is familiar with you, your vehicle, and your Optiom policy, and they are the best choice to help you maximize your benefit. If you had a negative experience and would prefer to go elsewhere, contact us first — no request is ever automatically approved, and the decision ultimately remains with Optiom.

Your payout letter outlines the minimum replacement vehicle value you need to purchase to maximize your Optiom benefit. If you spend less than the amount Optiom has allotted, your payout will decrease dollar for dollar to reflect what you actually spent on the replacement vehicle. If you spend below your primary insurer’s payout or the fair market value of the replacement vehicle, you would not be entitled to a payout. We recommend bringing your payout letter to your dealer, and if you want to confirm a payout in advance, submit a draft bill of sale for review before signing.

If Rental Vehicle Reimbursement is listed on your Policy Declaration, yes — coverage is excess to your primary auto insurance rental coverage, with a limit of $1,500 per policy year. It begins the day your primary insurer rental coverage ends and continues until you purchase your replacement vehicle or reach the benefit limit. This benefit can also be used toward alternative transportation like taxis, Uber, or public transit if you can provide proof of payment. It does not cover finance charges, insurance, maintenance, fuel, or warranties.

Under the Limitations Act, you have up to two years from the date of loss (the date of damage to your vehicle) to report your claim, submit the required paperwork, and settle your claim. That said, we highly recommend you contact us as soon as possible after a loss — our benefit calculations are based on costs at the time of the loss, so settling promptly helps you avoid any additional costs not covered by your Optiom policy.

A quick safety note
Optiom will never ask you to pay a fee to process your claim. If someone claiming to be from Optiom requests payment to release your benefit, hang up and call us directly at 1-844-427-7587.
